Thrive Worship Team Application

Dear Thrive Worship Team Applicant,

We are so glad that you have expressed interest in participating in the Thrive Worship Team! We are praying, along with you, that the Lord will guide this ministry, supplying it with the people and gifts necessary to help us be a congregation that worships Him in spirit and in truth.

Before you begin, please note that this application will take you some time to complete. Please be sure you have time to read the attached documents (Living Hope Statement of Faith and Living Hope Essentials) and understand them.

This application form is your first step in getting involved in this ministry. We desire to get to know you as well as understand where you could best use your gifts and talents. Please fill out the section of ministry that you desire to be interviewed for. (e.g. Vocal Team, Worship Band, Technical Team)

After filling out this form, Stephen Sterling will contact you to set up an interview and get you set up with Planning Center. The interview process is not intended to intimidate anyone, but instead to encourage Christians to use their God given gifts to fulfill their personal mission for Christ.

I pray that this will be a Spirit-driven process of prayer, encouragement, and discovery. The questions in the application form are meant to help us get to know you better. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions of us about the worship ministry here at Living Hope.

One last thing I will ask you to do. Be in prayer about your purpose, giftedness, and call to this ministry as we will be praying for you.

God Bless!
Stephen Sterling

Living Hope Statement of Faith

Please read the Statement of Faith and check if you agree or not.

Statement of Faith

1. The Bible
We believe that God has spoken in the Scriptures (1), both Old and New Testaments (2),
through the words of human authors (3). As the verbal plenary inspired Word of God (4),
the Bible is without error in the original writings (5). It is the complete revelation of His
will for salvation (6), and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human
knowledge should be judged (7). Therefore, it is to be believed in all that it teaches (8),
taught in its entirety (9), obeyed in all that it requires (10) and trusted in all that it promises
(11). It is fully sufficient for the faith and life of the Christian (12).

2. God
We believe there is one God (1), the Creator of all things (2), who is holy (3), infinitely
perfect (4), and eternally existing (5). This one God is a loving unity of three equally
divine Persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (the Trinity) (6). They are each God and
yet they are each a distinct Person, responsible for different duties within the Godhead.
(7) Having limitless knowledge (8) and sovereign power (9), God has graciously purposed
from eternity to redeem a people for Himself (10) and to make all things new (11) for His
own glory (12).

3. The Human Condition
We believe God created people innocent of sin, and in the image and likeness of God.
Unfortunately, man sinned and brought both physical and spiritual death to himself and
his posterity (1). No one can merit God’s favor, and as such we are in need of salvation
(2). We believe that each person’s nature is sinful and rebellious toward God and His
good design for life and worship (3). This can cause confusion about good and evil, as
well as harm to other people, ultimately ending in judgement, despair and death (4).

4. Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ (1) is God in the flesh (2), fully God (3) and fully man (4),
one Person in two natures (5). Jesus—the promised Messiah for all people (6)—was
conceived through the Holy Spirit (7) and born of the virgin Mary (8). He lived a sinless
life (9), was crucified under Pontius Pilate (10), arose bodily from the dead (11), ascended
into heaven (12) and sits at the right hand of God the Father (13) as our High Priest (14)
and Advocate before the Father (15).

5. The Work of Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ, as our representative (1) and substitute (2), shed His blood
on the cross (3) as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice (4) for our sins (5). His atoning death
(6) and victorious resurrection (7) constitute the only ground for salvation (8).

6. The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ (1). He
convicts the world of its guilt (2). He regenerates sinners and in Him they are baptized (3)
into union with Christ (4) and adopted as heirs (5) in the family of God (6). He also
indwells (7), illuminates (8), guides (9), equips (10), seals (11) and empowers (12) believers
for Christ-like living and service (13).

7. The Church
We believe that the true Church (1) is comprised of all who have been justified by God's
grace through faith alone in Christ alone (2). Believers are united by the Holy Spirit in the
body of Christ (3), of which He is the Head (4). The true Church is manifest in local
churches (5), whose membership should be composed only of believers (6). The Lord
Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism (7) and the Lord’s Supper (8), which visibly
and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when
celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the
believer (9). The purpose of the church is to glorify God and equip Christians with what
God’s Word teaches, so they can share their faith and make disciples (10).

8. Christian Living
We believe that God's justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power
and purpose (1). The new life Jesus gives Christians is to be experienced in this life and
in eternity. God commands us to love Him supremely, to love others sacrificially (2) and
to live out our faith with care for one another (3), compassion toward the poor (4) and
justice for the oppressed (5). With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in
Christ’s name (6), believers (7), are to combat the spiritual forces of evil (8). In obedience
to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people (9), always bearing
witness to the gospel (10) in word and deed (11). God’s grace is not an excuse to sin or
abstain from holiness (12).

9. Human Sexuality
We believe God created people in His image. He forms and highly values each person’s
life from the time of conception (1) until their natural death (2). We believe in the sanctity
of human life. He assigned gender to His people, male (man) and female (woman). He
created them sexually and genetically different, but with equal personal value, dignity
and purpose (3).
We believe that God ordained marriage as a solemn union between one genetic man
and one genetic woman (4). Those who accept and live within God’s design for sex,
biological gender, and marriage, experience the blessing of His good design (5).
Decisions to change or modify God’s plan for gender, marriage, and sexual activity are
sinful and are not to be practiced (6). God calls any sexual activity outside of His design
sinful and is not to be practiced (7). In His goodness and grace, God loves us and
provides redemption, restoration and forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. (8)
Therefore, Living Hope Bible Church seeks to be a church full of grace and mercy for
any person struggling with sexual temptation or involved in sexual sin who desires to
overcome those struggles through the power of the gospel and the Holy Spirit (9).
All members of Living Hope Bible Church are expected to uphold the ministry’s
perspective on marriage, gender, sexual intimacy, and appropriate behavior as set forth
in this provision. Individuals and organizations who desire to use Living Hope Bible
Church’s facilities must also act in accordance with this provision (10).

10. Christ's Return
We believe in the personal, bodily (1) and glorious (2) return of our Lord Jesus Christ (3).
The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God (4), requires constant expectancy (5)
and, as our blessed hope (6), motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service
and steadfast mission (7).

11. Response and Eternal Destiny
We believe that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son
into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through
him. (1) We believe that God will physically raise the dead (2) and judge the world (3),
assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment apart from
God (4), and the believer to eternal blessing and joy with the Lord (5), in the new heaven

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

By the grace of God, we seek to teach and preach the Word of God through the power of God to the people of God for the glory of God and the good of people.

LHBC Essential 2: We believe in Wholehearted Worship

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

By the grace of God, we seek to bear much fruit by sharing the Gospel and engaging our neighbors and world for the glory of God and the good of people.

PURPOSE OF THIS HANDBOOK
This handbook is not meant to be intimidating or overwhelming. It is meant to inspire each of us to reflect and prayerfully consider our motives and desires for being part of the worship ministry at Living Hope Bible Church. We also want to ensure that all those involved in the worship ministry are walking together in agreement regarding our purpose, and what is expected of every member. This isn’t just about music, it’s also about ministry.

OUR MISSION
“Living Hope Bible Church exists by the grace of God for the glory of God and the good of people. We do this by equipping and establishing our church and engaging and evangelizing our neighbors and world.”

OUR PURPOSE
To worship God and help others worship God.

WHY WE SERVE
1. To bring God honor as we proclaim truths about Him and as we draw near to Him. We consider being on the worship team a calling from God. This calling is not simply about musical talent, but about one's identity as a worshiper of God. While all of God's people are called to be worshipers, we believe there are some who are called to the worship ministry and act as lead worshipers.

2. To encourage one another to be fully devoted followers of Christ, loving Him with our whole heart, soul, and mind. Because of the holy nature of this calling, as a worship team we hold each other to high spiritual standards. We should strive to live lives worthy of the position and visibility God has granted us. When on the platform, we play our music for the audience of God, setting an example for the church.

3. To provide an atmosphere where those who do not yet know the Lord will be drawn to Him as we sing and speak of His glory and His love. We take seriously our responsibility to serve the gathered church by blessing them through our playing, singing, and speaking. This is both an honored privilege and an awesome responsibility.

TEAM CRITERIA
Joining the worship ministry is based upon talent/skill, servant attitude, commitment, spiritual maturity, and a heart for worship - but not necessarily in that order. All of these can be nurtured and grown if the passion and determination exist in the individual. Realize it is a privilege to lead God’s people in worship, and not necessarily a right. It is not the place to show-off our talents or to draw attention to ourselves in any way. Individuals who are unwilling to be held accountable to or meet these guidelines are encouraged to share their gifts in other ways within the body.

Individuals wishing to join this Worship ministry should submit the Worship Ministry Application given upon request.

THOSE IN THIS MUSIC MINISTRY WILL HOLD EACH ACCOUNTABLE TO:
- be born-again Christians exhibiting a healthy and growing walk with Jesus– we are worshipers who are leading others in worship of our God. An unbeliever is incapable of worshiping God, and therefore, leading worship. One cannot lead others where one has not already been. We are not just attempting to build a band; we are also building a team of worshippers.

- be in regular fellowship with God– making time to get to know Him more through His Word, prayer, personal worship, etc. Worship is not a one-day-a-week, Sunday-morning-only event, it should be the culmination of a week lived in worship. It should be a lifestyle, of continually praising our Creator and submitting to His will.

- be spiritually mature and obedient to the Word of God– like it or not, everyone involved in the worship ministry and/or “up front” during a service is seen by the congregation as a leader, and as such, should exemplify a growing walk with Christ, both inside and outside the church walls. The worship team gets a lot of attention because of the very nature of what we do. It is a very public role to have. And left unchecked, it can be easy to begin to believe we are special or better than those we lead. It follows then that we should strive to live lives worthy of the position and visibility God has granted us.

- worship while leading worship– We should lead by example, directing our hearts and passion toward Him in authentic, physical expressions of worship. Preparation is a huge part of this. If you are struggling to follow the chords or read the lyrics off your music sheet, your focus will not be on God.

- submit to leadership– of Living Hope Bible Church, the worship team, as well as the team leader. The nature of this ministry also requires a strong commitment to the people of this church. We must remember to always come with a servant attitude.

- communicate effectively– have questions? have a new idea? Getting distracted or frustrated? Something bothering you? Talk to us. Let the team leader know of any concerns, changes in schedule, potential absences, emergencies, or illness. Have the team leader’s cell number on your cell. We're here to serve and equip you to grow and succeed as a passionate follower of Jesus.

- be committed to musical excellence– learn your music, hone your skills. continually grow and practice your skills – as God deserves our best. We’re not looking for perfection, as that is not required to serve God, but we do expect you to be proficient and always prepared. You must be willing to give Him your best. Practice at home and take the commitment seriously. Remember that wrong notes, poor singing, and less-than-average music can distract others from focusing on God as easily as someone who is ‘showing off’ or performing. This can also interrupt the movement of the Holy Spirit in a worship service. And we certainly don’t want to limit what God will do simply because we can’t handle it musically.

- be a team player– Do your best to be present, prompt & prepared. Get to know and support your band mates. Work through differences with gentleness. Play selectively. Some people are very gifted musicians and/or vocalists, but for one reason or another (vocal range, musical style, personality, etc) have trouble flowing or fitting with the team.

- have the support of their family– it is important that your family supports your involvement in this ministry and accepts the necessary time commitment, which is not insignificant. Your family should always be your priority when considering your involvement in any ministry.

- be humble– music is fun, and people love it. As a result, it is incredibly easy to focus on ourselves and the music when things sound really good, or the worship was especially moving during a service. Always remember the One who gave you your talent. An attitude of humility is essential.

- be teachable– our talents can always be developed and improved, and we should be willing to humbly accept direction and constructive criticism from others and learn from it. Attend a worship seminar or conference to grow both musically and spiritually.

- be a reflection of Christ– we ask that should at anytime during your involvement you feel your personal life or conduct is not reflecting what we are about or what Christ would have, that you voluntarily step down until the situation changes.

- be modest in dress– be aware of your appearance. Be comfortable but be appropriate. Ask yourself – does what I wear distract others from worshiping Jesus? Would it be considered inappropriate by some? Will it draw attention to me? If so, then rethink your outfit. It is not our goal to tell you what to wear. Yet, we must be clear on what is NOT allowed to be worn while serving on stage. Both men and women must understand modesty and holiness in dress. For these reasons, we humbly ask that items of clothing such as low-cut tops, graphic tees with profane or unholy images or skirts higher than just above the knees not be worn while serving on stage.

- be committed to rehearsals– those scheduled to lead on Wednesday will be required to attend rehearsal before Youth Group.

- be prepared– come to rehearsals and services musically prepared by listening to and practicing songs beforehand and having all your music ready and in order.

OUR PHILOSOPHY OF PREPARATION
Preparation requires both personal and relational investments:

PRACTICE IS PERSONAL. Each musician and tech needs to learn his/her part before rehearsal. It is an investment both for the worship service and the rehearsal.

REHEARSAL IS RELATIONAL. Rehearsal is about the team. It is our time together to shape the songs, rehearse the flow of the service, and grow together as a team. If I come unprepared (or don’t attend at all), I affect the whole team as well as the worship service on Wednesday.

PREPARATION TERMS DEFINED
Here are the terms we use as we talk about preparation:

Practice - Practice is the personal preparation you put into learning your part and your role in the worship gathering.

Rehearsal - Rehearsal is a relational time of joining the pieces of the songs together and connecting the songs into a worship flow.

Sound Check - Sound Check is the time we take to make sure all the parts of the sound system are working, as well as getting the monitors and the house mixed.

Run-Through- Run-Through is more than just a warm-up. It’s our time to prepare musically and emotionally to lead worship through music. Our posture and attitude during the run-throughs should be the same as it will be during the worship service.

Start Time - Start Time really means “Ready to Play” time. Arrive early enough to be ready to play by the posted start time.

Personal Development - Personal Development is the ongoing, personal commitment to get better as a musician or tech. It happens through practice, lessons, training events & other ways you invest in deepening your skill.
